Our First Few Days on Maui

We arrived in Maui on Thursday, July 9, 2004. Perrin met us at the airport with leis for all. Hazel was super tired and frazzled, but we survived enough to go to the store and pick up baby supplies. Later that night, when it was really 11:00 pm at home (8:00 pm in Maui) we went to eat some HULA PIE at Marc's work. It was a beautiful, warm night and the pie, a mixture of vanilla-macadamia nut ice cream on oreo cookie crust topped with chocolate fudge and whipped cream, was delicious!
On Friday we went to visit Rebecca, Dan, Caleb and Rebecca's parents who were staying in Wailea in a very nice hotel with a BBQ. It was great for Hazel to play with a friend from home! We are going to the Old Lahaina Luau on Tuesday night with Rebecca and her family.
The next mornging we went to Perrin and Marc's regatta at Canoe Beach where they raced in outrigger canoes and had a big party long into the night with food, beer and bands. Hazel loved the sand and the ocean and the little things (coral, lava rocks, kukui nuts, assorted pods and sticks) she found on the beach. Amy did not like the big waves and undertow and steep incline of the beach, but Marc assured her that all the beaches were not like that one. And so the next day we went on a tour of beaches to prove this point.
We headed up to the northern part of the island and stopped at a few beaches before we settled on one at Kapalua Bay where we swam in the ocean (average water temperature is 82 degrees) and Hazel got lots of sand in her eyes. She enjoyed herself nonetheless. That night we ate taro burgers and poi at Perrin's restaurant. Hazel loves poi.
Yesterday we went on the Sugar Cane Train which Hazel found to be fabulous. Then we went swimming in the pool at P+M's where Amyand Kyle practiced snorkeling, much to Marc's embarassment. Hazel hung out in the floaty boat that Marc got her. She is really having a blast here and has been sleeping well because she is so exhausted at night from all of the exciting new things. Last night we went to see some guy light torches (again, tiki torches are something that Hazel had grown fond of) and then dive off of a black rock cliff at the Sheraton.
Today we are going to go to Baby Beach and Hazel can swim and play.
